New city, new studio

It's been a very busy year. My family and I have relocated to Denver. I'm in a new studio space at Jubilee Roasting Company which is allowing me to work larger. I'm working in what I'm referring to as "hyper collage." The works of Peter Maddon, Dustin Yellin and Fred Tomaselli have been inspiring me as I work larger and more complex.

More to come in this space!

White Elephant Painting

Tis the season to wrap up hideous miscellany and gift it to other people. Thrift stores are the ideal place to find weird White Elephant Gifts. And speaking of thrift stores ... artist Wayne White (check him out here) is the undisputed king of giving crappy thrift store paintings new life.
My wife and I found this "great" print at our local ARC thrift store and couldn't help but chuckle at how forlorn this child looks. My wife came up with words and I painted them on. Hope you hate it ... and happy Christmas!

It's for the babies ...

If you'll indulge some shameless self-promotion (it is MY website after all), I'd love to tell you: “I'm a pretty nice guy." Draw your attention to this Spaceman piece. I recently donated this piece to charity. March of Dimes helps babies, they provide funding for hospitals research helps save babies lives ... it's a pretty great organization. Anyway, March of Dimes recently had a fundraiser which included a silent auction - and that's where my Spaceman went. Lisa Shipley is the proud owner of that art - and a proud champion for babies!

Opening night pictures

Opening night went really well, the place was packed out all evening thanks to all of you! The work looked great on the walls and filled the space. Good feedback, good sales, crappy beer ... what more could you ask for?

Show write-up

Deb Courtney with the Colorado Springs Independent did a very complimentary write-up featuring my show opening tomorrow night. Here's a select quote:

“Collage can feel overwhelming visually, but the award-winning Grant has a deft touch, creating a feeling of narrative.”

Let's hope it lives up to the hype!

Show opens this friday

This Friday, September 5th, my new show opens at the ModBo in downtown Colorado Springs.

I've been documenting the final final (no more futzing around) pieces, and here are a few of my favorites. Hope you enjoy browsing, and can make it out to the show to see all ten new works.

Framing has begun!

I've shot a few images to be used in promoting the show. Below you'll see three of the 12+ pieces I'll be displaying this next month, including the largest collage I've ever created-almost seven feet wide, resin coated, framing to come.

Art update

Just finished shooting a promo video with photographer, videographer, storyteller Carson Nyquist - during which I actually got some work done in the studio. That work included pouring a resin coating for a relatively huge (12" x 79") and enormously detailed collage. Stay tuned for the promo video in the coming weeks. In the meanwhile here's a quick look at the collage piece:

New Studio/Work/Solo show

Life never slows down - and apparently neither do I.

In addition to prepping for my second child (a boy) and doing home renovations, I have built a studio in my back yard and continue to create new work for my upcoming show in September.

Let me take you on a "studio visit" to see what I've been up to.

This last year I've been doing a lot of experimentation and expanding my skill-sets. Now I'm combine collage, transfer, resin and found-object work in some of my largest works yet (most are 29" x 49" and 12" x 84").

Hope you enjoy looking, and please consider coming to my opening on Sept. 5th, 2014 at The Modbo, Downtown Colorado Springs.

Lots more to come,

Jeremy

Grant money recipient

I'm happy to say I've been selected by the Pikes Peak Arts Counsel as a 2013 recipient of an arts micro-grant. Here are a few images of the work in progress that the grant money will help me continue to build. Specifically the money is helping me buy resin, wood stain and other materials.

New work at the Business of Art Center

Friday, September 20th is the opening for a show called 12 Principles, in which I have three pieces - two of which are brand, spanking new. The Business of Art Center's Venue 515 will host the 12 Principles show featuring the work of Craig Cantrell, and a group of artists who work with reclaimed, recycled or repurposed materials.

513 Manitou Avenue, Manitou Springs, CO 80829

Here's a sneak peek of the two new pieces I will be showing.

Ivywild School: Revamp'd Show

Thanks to everyone who came out for the opening of the Revamp'd show!

This last month I've been incredibly honored to be included in the Revamp'd show at the new Ivywild School (home to Bristol Brewing Co., Modbo Co School). Not only do I have five pieces on display, but I have also made at least one sale.

I am showing three of my Ordinary Saints series (check out my new piece below) and two never-before-seen mixed media collage/transfers in a series of Spacemen Collages (see images below).

If you haven't had the chance to check out the Ivywild space go check it out—immediately. Not only is it a great place to get a local brew, good coffee and eats ... but the Revamp'd show will be coming down soon, so hurry up!

city we love - art fundraiser

I'm excited to participate in "City We Love" a charity event supporting Mary's Home, a program that provides resources, including housing, to single mothers and their children. For more information about the event click here.

This afternoon, I'll head out to donate this piece to the art auction portion of the event. There are several things about this piece that make it meaningful in this particular context.

-The rusted metal that borders this piece was given to me from the ashes of a home lost in the Black Forest Fire, just outside of Colorado Springs. How poetic that from the ashes of a lost home, others will receive homes.

-Colorado Springs is haunted by images of Native Americans. Chief Two Moons of the Cheyenne tribe is memorialized in stone above Phantom Canyon Brewery. The Pioneer museum has a room filled with artifacts of the indigenous people. Yet today, there is little or no indigenous presence. I see some subtle similarities between this overlooked people group, and the overlooked people who live and work in our midst.

This "City We Love" event will support causes that seek to dignify people who have been overlooked and marginalized. This event will not solve racism, it will not end homelessness or poverty, but it will raise awareness of significant issues. And the idea of giving dignity to ALL people ... that's something I'm proud to support.

New work: in progress

I've begun work on a new series and really a new direction in my art (as if I didn't already have enough projects). These are a couple of snapshots of what's in progress. I am working much larger, creating life size figures from various types of wood, including quite a bit of salvaged wood - that much, at least, carries over from my previous works.

More to come!
